Tour: The Sevy Series by Sarah-Jane Lehoux [Guest Post+ Give@way!]

Guest Post with Sarah-Jane Lehoux
What Helps Her Write

If you do a Google search on writing, you will find hundreds if not thousands of posts on how to beat writer’s block. Guess what? I don’t believe in writer’s block. I believe in hard work and maintaining motivation. Sometimes it can feel impossible to just sit down and let the words flow out of you, but you know what? I couldn’t run a marathon without practicing first, and that is exactly what writing is like.
Writing is exercise for your brain. You have to do it on a regular basis, even when you don’t feel like it, to see any appreciable results. So I approach writing like I approach a physical workout: lots of high energy music, lots of water, and lots of cursing.
But the amazing thing is that it does get easier. It becomes routine. It becomes something that you HAVE to do in order for your day to feel complete. Even if all you end up writing is utter garbage, it’s still working that great big grey muscle in your noggin.
Another thing that’s a must: support from your loved ones. Sometimes you need a cheerleader to boost your morale or give you a good swift kick in the bum. My husband is my biggest support system and always ready to tell me to stop whining and just do it!
Coddling yourself with thoughts of “Oh, I can’t write because I have writer’s block right now,” is the single biggest obstacle you have to get over if you ever want to call yourself a true writer.

The Books

Thief

Happily Ever After Doesn't Come Without a Price
In the crumbling city of Eloria, there are two indisputable facts. First, everyone has a dream. Secret, seemingly unattainable, altogether irresistible, it is the kind of dream that aches and, at times, burns. For most, it will forever remain a teasing enigma, but there are those for whom dreams grow into obsession. Which brings us to the second indisputable fact: everyone has a price. Protestations of morality have little meaning when confronted with the all-consuming passion of the soul. Better judgment is pushed aside for the chance to obtain the unobtainable. The only question remaining is just how much a person is willing to sacrifice in order to get what they want.
Sevy has always been a quick study in the wicked ways of Eloria. Since childhood, she has eked out a living for herself with the help of her sticky fingers and her indomitable spirit. She has no qualms about taking what she desires, and when the unrequited love of her life is mysteriously murdered, Sevy will stop at nothing to get him back. Elvish black magic, necromancy and demonic pacts are of little consequence if it means she can once again have her beloved at her side. But is she willing to murder her only friend to get the job done? Is there a line that even this selfish, self-proclaimed bitch is not prepared to cross?

Shades of War

There is More Than One Road to Redemption
Sometimes the past can't be forgotten. Sometimes the truth refuses to be buried. And sometimes the dead won't stay dead.
It began as a simple request: Journey to the Northern Jungles and bring a wayward son back to the safety of his farm and family before the racial tension that is building between humans and dark elves erupts into civil war. But life is never simple for Sevy, and she soon finds herself entangled in a bloody battle of good versus evil, love versus hate.
Old friends and enemies reunite, familial bonds are broken, and loyalty is tested. And in the midst of the steamy, sultry jungles, the ghosts of a serial killer's victims come out to play. Sevy, as petulant and irascible as ever, must overcome her personal demons in order to expose a madman and bring peace back to the kingdom. But just how much of her sanity must she sacrifice to help her friends? And how can she save anyone when she can't even save her own soul?

Masquerade

Never Trust a Liar, especially when they're telling the truth.
Starting over isn’t easy, especially when the world isn’t ready for you to change. Sevy, thief turned assassin turned mercenary, isn’t having any fun adjusting to a normal, law-abiding life. Luckily for her, an old partner in crime arrives with an irresistible proposition: a getaway to a tropical island, an adventure of a lifetime, and an amazing friendship ready to blossom into an even more amazing romance.
Things are looking up for Sevy. That is, until a pack of maniacal fairies with a taste for human flesh arrive on the scene.
Now she must unravel a web of magical intrigue hidden behind the outwardly idyllic atmosphere of the islands of Belakarta. Nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted. Trapped under the spell of a handsome and mysterious stranger, Sevy must fight fairies and tricksters to regain her freedom.
Or spend an eternity as a sorcerer’s plaything.

Tour: Root Bound by Tanya Karen Gough [Interview]

Interview with Tanya K. Gough
Author of Root Bound

1. Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

Of course! My name is Tanya Karen Gough (Gough is pronounced “Goff,” like “cough”). I was born in Canada, grew up in the United States, taught overseas for a while and then ended up back in Canada. I currently live in Toronto. I’ve been writing as long as I can remember: poetry and short stories when I was young, academic work (I studied English Literature in school), and marketing copy through work. I also helped write textbooks when I was teaching.

2. Where did you get the idea for Root Bound

ROOT BOUND came from a number of places. About 10 years earlier, I was playing around with the idea of a fairy tale mashup, with characters in the present who had no idea they were modern day versions of these iconic heroes. And no, it wasn’t at all like Once Upon a Time. I never really did anything with the storyline, but I did write a scene that stuck with me over time. Later on, when I started thinking about ROOT BOUND, the mashup idea was still there, but it had evolved into the world in my book – a place where all the fairy tales and books come to life in unexpected ways. By making this change, I found I had more freedom to explore themes of perception, memory, and finding one’s place in the world.

3. Who or what inspired you to become an author?

As I’ve said, I’ve been writing all my life. I’ve also been a voracious reader all my life, as well. I turn to books for information, for pleasure, and for escape. And writing has always been the way I best express myself creatively. My mom and sister both paint, my father plays guitar, and I write. It’s how I’m wired.

4. The character of your book you feel most attached to?

Ack, this is one of those “which one of your children do you love best” questions. As soon as I pick one, the others will get upset, and then I’ll end up with a head full of angry characters that don’t want to play with me anymore. However, I will say that the know-it-all brownie Mat is the most fun to write. It’s just plain fun to write about a know-it-all who doesn’t understand that they don’t really know anything. I also really like the way the goddess Ceres turned out.

Ceres is the Roman goddess of earth and agriculture (for a quick, kid-friendly version of the story, click here: http://rome.mrdonn.org/romangods/ceres.html). She goes dormant for six months when she’s mourning her daughter, so I imagined her spending winters in a cave, deep underground, not far from her child. Without her daughter, Ceres has no personality of her own, so she physically goes dormant like a seed, too.

5. Looking back at Root Bound, is there anything in the story you might have written a little differently? Something you would like to change?

I’m sure ROOT BOUND would be different if I had gone the traditional publishing route. Having access to a high end editor and the whole publishing machine might have smoothed out a few rough edges and made the book more commercially mainstream. But you lose some of the idiosyncrasies and unique features of the book in that process, too. On the other hand, self-publishing means I had the freedom to write the story I really wanted to write, on my own terms. I’m ok with that.

5. Any other books in the works? Goals for future project?

I'm working on Book Two in the Emma & the Elementals series. It's called Water Works.

Water Works is about ways of thinking about the world. Things that were true in Book One may not be true in Book Two, or they may have changed because things change over time, especially in a world that operates with a different set of logic rules. And because this book is about changing realities, she won’t be travelling in the classic Greek and Roman mythological world this time.  She’s going someplace less familiar. I’d like the reader to discover new worlds, too.

6. What book are you reading now?

I have a couple of things on the go right now. I just started Guy Gavriel Kay’s superb fantasy novel Under Heaven, set in ancient China. I’m also looking at Oliver Sacks’ books Hallucination and Mind’s Eye because I’m very interested in perception and how we see the world around us. I’m also working my way through Philip Pullman’s recent update of the Brothers Grimm stories.

7. What do you do when writers block strikes?

It depends. If I can’t write because I have no ideas, then I go to the movies, or a museum, or read a book. If I can’t concentrate, I walk. I tend to think a lot before I sit down to write, though, so once I have pen in hand, I just have to figure out how to translate the idea into story.

Root Bound
Emma And The Elementals #1
Genre: YA/Fantasy

How far will you go to find your way home?
Emma and her father are always on the move, travelling from place to place as her father’s work demands. Their new home, however, is different. There’s a frightening woman who lives down the hall: she bears an uncanny resemblance to a witch. A mysterious light comes from her apartment, and a small boy seems to be trapped inside.
School in this town is no happy place either, with an odd principal and a gang of girls who make tormenting Emma their special project. And strangest of all is the fact that there seem to be brownies – basement brownies, in the air vent in her bedroom.
Haunted by visions of her mother, Emma travels through the brownie burrow to the valley of Hades to visit with the goddess Ceres, following a series of clues that lead her across the sea of memory to the centre of the world.
There, on an inhospitable rock floating in a sea of steaming lava, Emma must find a way to release her mother from the sea of memory and restore magic to both the brownie burrow and the human world above.

Tour: Afterlife Academy by Jaimie Admans * Interview+Give@way!

Interview with Jaimie Admans

I am so happy today to host the amazing Jaimie Admans for the release of her second
book, The Afterlife Academy! For those of you who didn't know Jaimie's first book,
Kismetology, you can read my review here. Let's start with the questions !

1. I read, reviewed and LOVED your debut novel, Kismetology and now I see this book and I can not think about how different it looks from the first one. What inspired you in writing about a total different genre?
To be honest, I don’t think they’re as worlds apart as they sound! I’ve always loved the chick-lit genre, that’s what got me started on writing and, of course, Kismetology is pure chick-lit. I started reading and loving young adult books a few years ago, and when I had a plot idea that fitted neatly into the YA genre, it wasn’t a huge jump for me to start writing that. They are both romantic comedies, the only difference is that the characters are younger in Afterlife Academy, and there’s the slight paranormal twist. I still (and hopefully always will) happily write in both genres as I do love them both!

2. Describe Afterlife Academy in one sentence.
It’s a paranormal romantic comedy about one girl’s journey into death-after-life as she learns that her perfect life wasn’t nearly as perfect as she thought it was.

3.What would you say the hardest part of writing this book was?
As usual, making myself sit down and write it rather than procrastinating and fiddling around on the internet all day! Procrastination is my worst habit, even if it’s something I want to write or a scene I’m really excited to get into, I still put off doing it until the last possible moment! The other hard part was getting the balance right with Riley. She’s the main character in Afterlife Academy and she starts off as a popular bully – a girl you love to hate. She grows throughout the book and becomes a much nicer person, but I was worried that I wasn’t balancing it out enough and readers might end up hating her rather than cheering her on as I hoped they would!

4.If you had to pick one character as your favorite, who would it be and why?
Anthony. He was originally intended to be a bit of a boring geek, but his character changed when I started writing him, and he became unexpectedly good fun and friendly. Riley changes her opinion of him over the course of the book and I did too. I actually never intended for their relationship to develop in quite the way it did but I enjoyed writing Anthony so much that he became a bigger character in the book than intended!

5. Do you like listening to music while writing? If yes, can you name a couple of songs that helped you while writing Afterlife Academy?
I need quiet to write in, so I don’t listen to music while writing as such, but there is a song that I consider the soundtrack to this book, and that’s I’m Alive by Aaron Tveit. It really summed up a lot of Riley’s feelings and thoughts and I listened to it a lot at the time I was writing the book!

6.What books have most influenced your life most?
Many. I grew up reading Enid Blyton, Judy Blume and Virginia Andrews, and all their stories made me want to pick up a pen and write like them. As I got older, I got into chick-lit like the Shopaholic series and Bridget Jones, but it was the book See Jane Date by Melissa Senate that made me really connect with a character and want to write a book like that. That’s what got me started writing chick-lit!

7. Who's your favourite author?
It’s hard to choose just one. I still adore everything Judy Blume has ever written – her books meant so much to me as a teenager and still do today. I still have my battered, tear-stained, dog-eared copy of Tiger Eyes I must’ve read a hundred times when I was thirteen!
And I will buy anything by Meg Cabot or Sophie Kinsella first thing on release day, I wouldn’t even need to read the blurb first!

8.What book are you reading now?
I’m currently reading The Forgotten Ones by Laura Howard, which is absolutely fantastic so far. I haven’t had much time for reading lately so it’s taking me ages but I’m enjoying it so much and can’t wait to get back to it!

9. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Yep, I’m currently editing a young adult romantic comedy, hopefully for release sometime this summer. I also have a YA Christmas novel coming out at the end of the year, and would love to get a festive chick-lit novella out too!

10. And for concluding, do you have any advice for other writers?
It doesn’t work for everybody, but write quick and messy first drafts – don’t edit them, don’t fiddle with them, just write them. When you’ve got a first draft, you can work on fixing it, but until then just write forwards until you reach the end. My first drafts are ugly, messy, and need so much editing, but if I went back and edited every sentence while I was writing it, I’d never have a finished draft at all.
And ignore criticism – just because one person doesn’t like your book, it doesn’t mean everyone won’t. And on the same note, just because one person loves it, don’t expect everyone will, and don’t take negative reviews personally – everyone has different tastes!

Afterlife Academy
by Jaimie Admans

Even being dead isn’t enough to get you out of maths class.

Dying wasn't on sixteen-year-old Riley Richardson's to-do list. And now, not only is she dead, but she's stuck in a perpetual high school nightmare. Worse still, she's stuck there with the geekiest, most annoying boy in the history of the world, ever.

In a school where the geeks are popular and just about everything is wrong, Riley has become an outcast. She begins a desperate quest to get back home, but her once-perfect life starts to unravel into something not nearly as great as she thought it was. And maybe death isn’t really that bad after all...

Welcome to Afterlife Academy, where horns are the norm, the microwave is more intelligent than the teachers, and the pumpkins have a taste for blood.

The Author

Jaimie is a 28-year-old English-sounding Welsh girl with an awkward-to-spell name. She lives in South Wales and enjoys writing, gardening, drinking tea and watching horror movies. She hates spiders and cheese & onion crisps.
She has been writing for years but has never before plucked up the courage to tell people.
Afterlife Academy is her third novel and she hopes you enjoy it. There are plenty more on the way!

Review: Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Warm Bodies
Author: Isaac Marion
Published: 28th October 2010
Publisher: Vintage
Format: eBook
Number of Pages: 241
Source: Bought
Purchase: TBD, Amazon, B&N

From Goodreads

'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...

My review

Warm Bodies was a touching, heart-warming novel about zombies that I would have never though it will surprise me this much.

As soon as the film was released, one of my best friends read the book and was enthusiastic about it, she loved it but, nevertheless, I couldn't shake away the feeling that it was not my cup of tea. I just have to say that I had been also very influenced by the film trailer (that didn't make justice to the book, I can say that now) and the story seemed childish, a little too ironic for my tastes, something funny yes, but probably nothing I would have liked to read.

I couldn't be more wrong.

Warm Bodies is an excellently written book, thoughtful, moving, and with that light touch of Paranormal here and there. Infact, even if zombies are the protagonists, I think this book is just more than that, it is not the ordinary Paranormal novel, it is the diary of a zombie who feels to be like a normal person but who just not has the mediums to express how he feels. The Paranormal context is just a claim to develop themes that otherwise would have been banal; the zombies, the curse, was just the product of human hate and also, R, the protagonist, is the example par excellence that if you really do want something, you can achieve it, you can actually change and win what you have been craving for.

Let's just say that the best parts of the book were R's thoughts, I loved that the story was completely told by his point of view because in this way the consciousness of the reader grows up with R's, since he is started to a completely new life, a life in which he is not alone anymore, a life in which hope can live. I found it awesome how easily you can grow fond of the characters, especially R, and this aspect made the book incredibly emotional, in my opinion, because it was impossible not to feel touched during R's change. See how his emotions grew, how he tried to return to human habits, how deep his love for Julie was.. it was all perfect! And the author's writing style was so charming, cynical, direct, harsh sometimes and perfectly able to describe his characters' emotions.

I also really liked Julie's character and her strong personality. It was really interesting and sad, at the same time, reading about a young girl who was born a grew up during the period of the curse, and it was even more sad reading about how she was forced to do nasty things to achieve some money. I think that all about her past was incredibly touching and yes, I know I have been repeating touching for at least a million times but I really think this book can affect readers!
Something I really enjoyed about her personality is that despite the condition in which she grew up, she didn't lose hope, she's always found a reason to live even if sometimes it seemed impossible. I really liked her relationship with music and art and it was lovely how she and R could communicate through songs' verses.

Another aspect of the book that was really interesting is how the author decided to tell part of Julie's story through Perry's thoughts, it was brilliant! First, because it was a constant reminder to R about his true nature and about what he had done, second because it showed us the differences between the two characters and made us understand what was that Julie found so amazing and lovely in R's personality.

Well, let's just say that Warm Bodies has entered my favourite list, alongside with Michelle Hodkin and Cassandra Clare.. do you really need more boosts?

Rated 5.0 !

Release Day Blitz: Fall by Cindy Paterson

Fall
by Cindy Peterson

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release date: May 7th 2013
Cover Artist: Mark Paterson

“He’s destroying me—us. I need him like my next breath, yet I’m suffocating.”

An unrequited love that has ripped her to pieces.

Delara has loved Waleron for over a century. Their intense chemistry is sensual, gripping, irresistible. But tragedy struck, and after sixty-one years of believing he was dead, Waleron returns a tortured man. He claims the man she loves is dead, yet the undeniable sexual tension still pulls them together.

“I am no longer the man you love, maitagarri. I am incapable of it.”

Waleron has given his oath to protect the Senses. He will sacrifice everything for them. But there is one Senses he has vowed to protect more than any other—Delara. He will do anything to make certain she is safe, even if it means he must deny her the love they once shared.

She is the hunted.

Delara’s life is in jeopardy and Waleron will do anything to protect her. But he never suspected that Xamien, the man he brings to help protect her is way more important to her than he ever knew.

Torn between two men and hunted by another, Delara must fight her hardest battle—herself.

The Excerpt

Waleron changed gears, and put his hand on top of hers. His thumb rhythmically stroked back and forth across the back of her hand. It was a gesture that she hadn’t anticipated out of Waleron.
She didn’t want to pull away, but knew she had to.
“We need to discuss a couple things, Maitagarri.”
Here we go. Waleron was always one for complete control over every situation and she was certain this situation was more than he’d ever projected having to deal with.
“You will never discuss where I live. Ever.” Fair enough. “A few rooms remain locked. Do not attempt to open them. For any reason.” Okay, so he had more secrets locked away. Figures. “You will not venture outside the premises.” She rolled her eyes. “And despite what I show you tonight, you will not speak of the Lilac. Do you understand me?”
“Pez, I know your narcissistic kaleidoscope of rules.”
“Then you know that I will accept nothing but compliance from you in my house.”
“I can follow a few rules, Pez. I’m a Senses. A warrior. Or have you forgotten that? Because it seems you’ve forgotten a hell of a lot lately. Like that I’m single and can fuck whoever I want and you dragging me away from him won’t stop that.”
“You’re trying to hurt me.”
“Damn right I am.” She had to and she hated it. But if it was the only way to protect him then she’d do it. He couldn’t lose his Taldeburu. She was hoping he’d turn the car around and change his mind after her harsh words. He didn’t.
“How long have you been with Xamien, Delara?”
Damn it, this is not something she wanted to discuss with him. Having him know that she went to Xamien after the bargain with Trinity, the witch-bitch—that she stayed with Xamien to heal from her emotional wounds Waleron cut into her soul. God, her pride would take a beating. He didn’t deserve to know she still was tortured.
“Delara.”
“A while.”
He glanced at her and she recognized the scowl. It meant spit it out cause I’m not letting the issue go. Fine, he wanted the truth, he’d get it. “When you decided to sleep with Trinity, I went to Xamien.”
More silence.

The Author

I am Xamien’s secret lover. Well, in my head I am and since I’m single this is completely allowed. Some of you may ask, who is Xamien, don’t worry you will meet him soon enough, but no falling in love with him. He is all mine.
Writing books is a fantastic way to have adventures that are impossible to have otherwise. I mean do you really want to fall in love with Waleron? He is so unstable and would never pick up after your dogs or clean the litter box. Not to mention the fact that he is always out killing disgusting grave robbing bug people.

Curling up with a good book and losing yourself to another time and place is the greatest reward. Being able to feel a character’s emotions, their fears, pain and love. Now that is incredible. I relish in the books that stay with me long after they have ended. This is what I strive for in my writing. To give the readers, and myself, an escape into another world, my world.
I have been writing since I was twelve. My parents, sorry mom and dad, would send me to my room for an hour every night to do homework, and instead I wrote stories. Oops, guess that is why I did so bad in math.
I have never stopped writing since then and never will. It’s like an addiction, but a good one. I adore stepping into the shoes of a character and deciding their fate. The characters are why I write. I want to fall in love with them (even the bad ones), so that I care about what happens to them in a story. If I can’t care about the characters then why bother with the story.
